What Makes a Good Small Business Website?
A good small business website isn't about fancy animations. It's about helping a stranger understand what you do, trust you, and contact you — in under a minute, on their phone.

1. It says what you do in the first five seconds
Visitors decide almost immediately whether they're in the right place. The top of your homepage should state plainly what you offer and where: "Residential roofing in Barrie and surrounding areas" beats "Excellence in every project." Clever slogans are fine as a supporting line, but clarity comes first.
2. It works beautifully on a phone
For most local businesses, the majority of visitors arrive on mobile. That means readable text without zooming, buttons large enough to tap, menus that are easy to open, and a phone number that calls when tapped. Test your own site on your phone — if anything is fiddly for you, it's fiddly for customers.
3. It loads quickly
People leave slow sites. Oversized photos, heavy plugins and auto-playing videos are the usual culprits. A lean site with properly sized images feels professional and also helps with search visibility, since page experience is one of many signals search engines consider.
4. It makes contacting you effortless
Every page should have an obvious next step: call, book, or request a quote. Keep forms short — name, contact info and a message are often enough. And make sure submissions actually arrive; a surprising number of small business forms are quietly broken.
5. It builds trust honestly
Trust comes from specifics: real photos of your work or team, clear service descriptions, your service area, how pricing works, and genuine reviews if you have them. Avoid stock photos that look generic and never use fake testimonials — customers can tell, and it undermines everything else.
6. Search engines can understand it
You don't need to be an SEO expert, but the basics matter: a unique title and description for each page, one clear main heading, descriptive page addresses, image descriptions (alt text), and your business name, area and contact details written consistently.
- Clear headline stating what and where
- Mobile-first layout
- Fast-loading pages
- Contact option on every page
