How Google Ads Works for Small Businesses

Google Ads can put your business at the top of search results today — but it can also spend money quickly if it's set up carelessly. Here's how it actually works, in plain language.

The basic idea

With Google Search Ads, you choose keywords related to your business — for example "emergency electrician Newmarket". When someone searches something related, Google may show your ad at the top or bottom of the results, marked as sponsored. You generally pay only when someone clicks.

It's an auction, but not just about money

Every time someone searches, an instant auction decides which ads appear and in what order. Your bid matters, but so does quality: how relevant your ad and landing page are to the search, and how likely people are to click. A well-organized campaign with relevant ads can sometimes outrank a competitor spending more.

Setting a budget

You set an average daily budget and can pause or change it anytime. Costs per click vary enormously by industry and location — some local services are inexpensive, while competitive fields like legal or home services can be costly. It's wise to start with a budget you're comfortable testing for a month or two, then adjust based on results.

Keywords and negative keywords

Choosing keywords is about intent. "Roof repair Barrie" signals someone ready to hire; "how to fix a roof shingle" probably signals a DIYer. Negative keywords stop your ads from showing on irrelevant searches — like "jobs", "free" or "course" — and are one of the easiest ways to stop wasting money.

Where the click lands matters

Many campaigns fail not because of the ads but because of the page people land on. If someone searches for furnace repair and lands on a generic homepage, they may leave. A focused page that matches the search, loads fast, and has a clear call-to-action converts far better.

Track conversions, not just clicks

Clicks are not customers. Set up conversion tracking so you know which keywords lead to calls, form submissions or bookings. Without it, you're guessing. With it, you can move budget toward what works and cut what doesn't.

  • Start small and focused on your best services
  • Target only the areas you actually serve
  • Use negative keywords from day one
  • Send clicks to a relevant landing page
  • Track calls and form submissions
  • Review search terms regularly

A realistic expectation

Google Ads is a tool, not a guarantee. Some businesses see strong returns quickly; others need time to refine, and some markets simply cost more. Be wary of anyone promising specific results. Judge success by real enquiries and customers over a few months.
